The River Sweeps Opening Day of Courtney Miller Invitational
MADEIRA, FL - Indian River opened the Courtney Miller Invitational in dominant fashion on Friday, shutting out Pasco-Hernandez State College 10-0 before closing the day with a 9-0 win over Enterprise State Community.
In game one, The River got on the board in the top of the first inning after Gibson was struck by a pitch and Wolfe walked, each scoring one run. Indian River added to its early lead in the top of the second inning after Pasco-Hernandez State College committed an error and Alvey singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Wilkinson earned the win in the circle for The River. The starter gave up one hit and zero runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out seven and walking one. Gomez threw one and one-third innings of scoreless relief, surrendering zero hits while striking out two and walking none.
Alvey provided pop in the middle of the lineup and led the team with three runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Wolfe and Alvey each collected two hits. Piar led the team with three walks, helping Indian River total six walks in the game. Piar, Seabrook, and Alvey each stole multiple bases as The River racked up 13 stolen bases overall. Indian River turned two double plays and committed no errors in the win.
The River carried that momentum into game two, easily dispatching Enterprise State Community 9-0 to close out the first day of the invitational.
Indian River struck first in the bottom of the first inning after a steal of home plated one run and Terito homered to left field, scoring two. The River extended its lead in the bottom of the second when Piar grounded out, scoring one run, Alvey tripled to drive in two runs, and Terito was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in another run.
Indian River added two more runs in the bottom of the third on an inside-the-park home run by Shields. Eekhoff earned the win, surrendering one hit and zero runs over three innings while striking out six and walking none. McDonald and Walker each appeared in relief and shut down Enterprise State Community to secure the combined shutout.
Seabrook and Alvey each collected two hits. Shields, Alvey, and Terito each drove in two runs in the victory. Alvey stole two bases as The River continued to pressure opponents on the base paths, finishing with five stolen bases in the game. Indian River also showed discipline at the plate with six walks and turned another double play while committing no errors in its second win of the weekend.
