Pioneers pick up first win of the tournament

The 2017 FCSAA State Softball Tournament got underway at Vero Beaches' Historic Dodgertown today. The Lady Pioneers started the tournament as a number one seed after winning the Southern Conference Championship during the regular season.  The seeding put the team in a 1:30 match-up versus Santa Fe College out of Gainesville.

Both teams showed some early nerves coming out, finishing the first inning tied at one.  Indian River settled in during the bottom of the second, opening up a substantial lead when the bats came to life, with a six run inning.

Moving into the third, down by six runs, Santa Fe found a spark scoring four runs of their own, three of which came on a homerun.  This pulled Santa Fe into within two runs heading into the bottom half of the inning and Indian River's turn on offense.  IRSC wasted no time striking back with two runs of their own, moving the score to 9-5 in their favor heading into the fourth.

Santa Fe was able to score one more run over the duration of the game, but ultimately IRSC picked up their first win of the tournament with a 9-6 victory.

The team will face the winner of the Gulf Coast vs. State College of Florida game taking place now.  Game time for IRSC's second round match-up is 6:30 PM.
